WYCDO Kenya is a voluntary non-partisan organization registered in April 2003 under the Kenya Non-Governmental Organization Act (NGO Act 1990). It is regulated under the NGO Coordination Board of Kenya. It was founded by Margery Nduta (a mother, teacher, development worker, and community mobilizer) with two co-founders Patrick Onyango ( Lawyer and civil rights activist) and Terry Kiragu (Development Practitioner).
WYCDO Kenya was borne out of a Community-Based Organization (CBO) formed in 1998 to help poor communities raise their voices and demand for their rights. It acted as a hub for community members to get vital information about accessing services regarding gender and young people issues. It was founded to build a people-centered movement to uplift living standards with the belief that if mothers were empowered they would invest better in their children’s education and thus catalyze positive change for future generations. The founder, being an educationist, believes in the power of education as a basis for creating equality and for causing positive change in society. The organization is located in Langata area within Nairobi. It is situated around one of the biggest urban informal settlements known as Kibera. Its location provides a unique advantage to make a positive difference for many vulnerable community members affected by abject poverty particularly focusing on women & girls and young people within its surroundings.
In 2003 WYCDO Kenya transformed and registered as an NGO to give it a wider scope for outreach and impact. WYCDO Kenya together with its partners attempts to bring about solutions and support communities to address challenges in terms of reducing vulnerability caused by: high levels of poverty, and gender-based violence mostly affecting women and girls, including uplifting standards of living by supporting the economic empowerment of women and young people.
WYCDO’s programs work through partnerships and networks of stakeholders as a vehicle for sustainability.
WYCDO promotes balanced communities, families and environments where women, girls and young people feel better empowered to contribute and participate in the positive transformation of their communities and families without fear or favor. Our programmes aim to empower and change mindsets that cause people to remain trapped in a cycle of poverty, impoverishment and a feeling of helplessness from generation to generation.
Our programmes are people-centered and aim to restore people’s dignity and well-being keenly focusing on women & girls and young people. We develop the capacity of vulnerable communities to get back to the driving seat of their lives and empower them to gain the capability to identify challenges affecting them while taking responsibility for solving those challenges. We further connect target communities to networks of pertinent development partners and service providers that can support in tackling challenges identified and in leveraging opportunities “ people to people connection for poverty reduction’.
We aim to reduce poverty, vulnerability and inequality by empowering communities and families to become more proactive in handling the challenges surrounding them. Beneficiaries are empowered to develop a “voice” to articulate identified issues and to become effective positive contributors to development in their families, community and nation as a whole. We are focusing on ending gender inequalities, including empowering families, children and youth right from the community level.
An empowered society without discrimination and inequalities, where communities particularly women & girls and young people enjoy all freedoms and have capability to leverage on opportunities surrounding them breaking out of the cycle of poverty and extreme vulnerability.

In our view empowerment means equipping people with skills, knowledge, strategies and general capability for healing and getting back to the drivers seats of their lives
