Since 1998 WYCDO has been actively engaged with communities and has achieved success in advocating and creating awareness on women and children’s rights, particularly fighting against violence and abuse.  WYCDO acts as a one stop centre for communities to access information on available services for prevention and protection against abuse and violence of women, children and the elderly.  WYCDO with its founder being an educationist,  has also been instrumental in offering advisory services to informal schools in slum areas in Kibera and Mukuru,  particularly on how to incorporate  effective and efficient educational system that offers quality education while mentoring poor children.

WYCDO with partners has supported about 20 women and their families gain practical life skills in crafts making and other professional skills like tailoring, hairdressing, cookery etc .  WYCDO has also  helped more than 100 families access services in education , health  and social welfare care like counseling , HIV/AIDs support and treatment including conducting more than 100 empowerment session for young people and women .  Additionally WYCDO has supported many families (women children and men)  from slum areas access justice and pursue their rights.

Every week and in collaboration with St. Michael’s Catholic Church,  WYCDO provides a platform for Kibera women engaged in casual domestic work to meet and share life’s experiences with each other.  Kibera is one of the biggest urban slums in Nairobi, Kenya.  More than 90% of people in Kibera are living below the poverty line.   The weekly platforms have become a strong space for women to build solidarity and share with each other.   WYCDO and the community value this platform as critical for women and vulnerable people to have  safe space for dialogue and support – and will continue for the coming years.  The community groups are gaining  psychological healing and have  free space for expression and for building solidarity for action.

In education WYCDO has supported more than 30 kids gain scholarship and other forms of assistance to complete education.   We have also been giving career guidance on resume writing to young people and have connected them to job opportunities.
